The Renew NC housing recovery program, managed by the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Division of Community Revitalization, has extended its application deadline to the end of January 2026. This extension offers additional opportunity for homeowners in Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, and Watauga counties who need assistance repairing or rebuilding homes damaged by Hurricane Helene. Since the program’s launch in June 2025, over 6,500 applications have been received, and construction is actively underway in several affected areas, including Watauga County. Major Investments in Infrastructure and Water Resilience
Governor Josh Stein recently announced hundreds of millions in infrastructure funding for western North Carolina, including an emphasis on Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, and Watauga counties. Notably, on December 11, 2025, $270 million was awarded to 58 water infrastructure projects statewide, spearheaded by the NC Department of Environmental Quality. The Western Piedmont Council of Governments secured $7.56 million to repair nearly 300 septic systems damaged by Helene, directly benefiting residents across our focus counties.
